From the Heart | What to Write in Your Valentine’s Day Card

Many people feel overwhelmed by the pressure to give their loved ones ‘the perfect Valentine’s Day’. It’s easy to get swept up in all the red and pink hearts exploding from every store as the holiday draws closer. Should you buy the chocolates? The jewelry? How about a puppy, or a new car, or a private island? After all, you want to show your special someone just how much they matter to you — what if you get it wrong?

Rewind. Freeze-frame.

Love — romantic or otherwise — isn’t something you can put a monetary value on. It’s not something you can ‘get wrong,’ and it’s certainly not something you can perfect. Any celebration of love should be focused on the love itself — not gifts, or expectations, or traditions. The act of loving someone is what matters.

Not the message you were expecting from a greeting card service? While it is true that we believe in the power of a well-thought-out greeting card, what our HELLOFROM team really believes in is authenticity — saying things like you mean it. A card is only as thoughtful as the, well, ‘thought’ behind it. Anything else is just a waste of cardstock.

We know what you’re thinking — where is the Valentine’s Day card writing advice?

Before you get yourself worked-up over wording, let’s talk about the unique origins, mythos, and meaning behind Valentine’s Day.

It’s Complicated | What's Valentine’s Day All About?

To put it frankly, no one really knows the truth behind this important holiday. Historians agree that the namesake most likely hails from Christian or Roman mythology, as many Valentine’s Day traditions stem from those two ancient cultures. However, with several legendary figures bearing variations of the name ‘Valentine,’ the origin of the name itself is shrouded in obscurity.

The three most likely Valentine candidates all come from Catholicism, in third century Rome: the Priest, the Bishop, and the Prisoner.

Legend has it that Emperor Claudius II once outlawed marriage for young men. He had decided that men without wives or families made better, more dedicated soldiers. However, Valentine the Priest found the law unjust, and defied the Emperor by performing marriages in secret. When the Emperor learned of his insubordination, he condemned Valentine to be executed.

The tale of the Bishop — Valentine of Terni — is similar enough that it is often confused with Valentine the Priest, as both were said to have been beheaded by Claudius II outside of Rome. However, plenty of historians contest that the two were in fact separate individuals — and either could be the inspiration for the holiday.

Finally, Valentine the prisoner was rumored to have aided imprisoned Christians from being tortured at the hands of their Roman captors. One story even claims that he was the first person to send a ‘Valentine’ card; he fell in love with a young woman who had visited him during his confinement, and before his death, wrote her a letter signed, ‘From your Valentine.’

Historians are also unsure as to why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th. Some claim that Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the anniversary of St. Valentine’s death or burial; others contend that the date was chosen to compete against the pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia, which traditionally took place on February 15th. Pope Gelasius outlawed Lupercalia at the end of the 5th century, and declared February 14th St. Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that Valentine’s Day became a holiday associated with love and romance.

Valentine’s Day is now celebrated in countries all across the world, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Mexico, and Japan. Each culture brings its own unique traditions and customs. Although we will probably never know for sure just who this legendary St. Valentine was, or why February 14th has become a day for lovers, the common themes of love, sacrifice, and romance throughout all of these legends contribute to the holiday that we still celebrate to this day.

Written with Love | Make Valentine's Day More Meaningful With a Card

Valentine’s Day is consistently one of the most popular card-sending holidays around the world: and that’s not even including Valentine cards that are delivered by hand. Store bought cards are common, but there are plenty of people — especially school-age children — who create handmade cards for their loved ones.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; handwritten messages make people happy. They show that someone took the time to think about you — that they went out of their way to express what you mean to them, and how they feel. There’s intention behind a handwritten message. It’s something you just can’t get from an email or text message.

It makes sense that this intimate, thoughtful form of communication would blend so well with a holiday that celebrates love. But if the idea of writing a Valentine’s Day message gives you butterflies — in an anxious way — take a look at these ideas of what to write in a Valentine’s Day card.

Things to Say in a Valentine's Day Card for Significant Other/Partner

One of the best aspects of receiving a physical greeting card is that it can be saved. You can look at it again and again over the years, and remember the special person who sent it to you. That’s why a Valentine’s Day card is such a lovely, romantic gesture — and why you should definitely give one to your SO this year.

That being said, deciding what to actually write in your card can be tricky. Think about the special relationship you share; terms of endearment, memories, and inside jokes are all a great way to personalize a Valentine. You should also take into consideration the type of relationship you have. For example, if you and your partner have only been together for a month, a card declaring your undying love for them might be ill received. Likewise, if you and your significant other are engaged, you might write about your excitement for your shared future.

Try not to get too caught up in the idea of writing something ‘perfect’. If you say it from the heart, your partner is sure to love it. If you need inspiration for what to say in a Valentine's Day card, consider these examples;
